Peace Through Education explores the impact of quality education in conflict-affected areas.
We are currently telling the story of Dr. Mohammad Khan Kharoti and Green Village School in Shin Kalay Afghanistan.
With permission from the Taliban, Dr. Kharoti was able to start his school in 2001, with only 16 students, by 2008 he had over 1,200 students attending his school daily, 400 of which were girls.
Sadly, tragedy struck mid-October 2008 with the destruction of the school by unknown assailants. Fanaticism, jealousy, thievery — no one really knows who or why the school was striped and demolished, though the entire village felt its loss: “When they saw the school … destroyed, they thought their future is destroyed. The future of their children is destroyed.”
Through the words of former teachers and students, Mohammad and his family, Afghani government officials, and the board of Green Village Schools (Mohammad’s non-profit organization) we see the impact the school had on the students and the village of Shin Kalay. And we follow Mohammad on his emotional journey to rebuild his school; and explore whether education can be used to help promote peace in war stricken Afghanistan.
